Remember yesterday when I told you about my first Shopify store disaster?

Well, years later, I decided to get serious about driving my own traffic.

I dabbled in Google ads, Facebook ads, podcast sponsorships, print advertising, you name it.

Let’s just say I got mixed results.

But today I wanted to tell you about yet another traffic experiment, when I launched an affiliate program for a brand I was running.

The business was doing low six figures annually, Meta ads kinda sorta worked but not quite, so I figured affiliates would be my ticket to exponential growth.

I set up the software ($30/month) and got to work recruiting affiliates.

I invited customers. I reached out to the email list. I posted on social media.

And people signed up! About 50 of them, actually.

I was PUMPED.

This was it. My army of salespeople, ready to spread the word and send me customers.

Fast forward two years...

Only THREE of those affiliates ever drove a single sale.

The best performer generated a whopping $500 in total revenue.

Meanwhile, I had paid $720 for the affiliate software over those two years.

Whomp whomp.

But here's the thing...

The problem wasn't the affiliate concept. The problem was WHO I recruited.

See, most people aren't cut out to be affiliates. They sign up with good intentions, but they don't have:

  1. An audience that trusts them

  2. The ability to create persuasive content

  3. The motivation to consistently promote

But those who DO have these things? They're worth their weight in gold.

One good affiliate can outperform 1000 mediocre ones.
